Due to the short notice, the requirement that dues be paid at least 30 days in advance of Convention (a date which has already passed) has been suspended this year by vote of the Executive Committee. Convention attendees may pay their dues at Convention Registration and be entitled to vote.
Program Detail (Film and Panel)
We will be showing Cindy L. Abel’s ground breaking and award-winning documentary film BREAKING THROUGH: Out of the Closet, Into the Halls of Power followed by a short panel discussion with LGBT and Ally Elected Officials and Candidates including:
- Al Austin, former Charlotte City Council member
- Mark Kleinschmidt, former Mayor of Chapel Hill
- Wendy Ella May, Candidate US Congress
- Christian Cano, Candidate US Congress
- LaWana Mayfield, current Charlotte City Council member
In this ground-breaking documentary, openly LGBT elected officials at all levels and from across the country – including the first gay US Senator, Tammy Baldwin – share their stories of self-doubt and triumph over multiple barriers ranging from race and poverty to gender and sexual orientation, revealing a deeply personal, rarely-seen side of politicians and LGBT people.
This Documentary aired on PBS, but was not carried by UNC-TV.
