Annual Membership Meeting 2018 Report

ginger-walker-LGBT DemsGreetings from the President!

August was a very busy month for the LGBTQ Democrats of North Carolina and our County Chapters!

We had a successful Annual General Body Meeting on August 11th in Raleigh. Many thanks to Rev. Vance Haywood, Jr and St John’s Metropolitan Community Church for providing the meeting space!

We began our meeting by welcoming Elected Officials and Candidates, some of whom joined us and others who sent their regrets and well wishes. Wayne Goodwin, NC Democratic Party Chair was also unable to join us in person, but called in to welcome everyone and share his excitement about our candidates and plans to ensure a “Blue Wave” of victory in the upcoming mid-term elections!

We were honored to have the statewide Judicial Candidates join us as our Keynote Speakers – Anita Earls, NC Supreme Court Candidate and NC Court of Appeals Candidates Allegra Collins, Toby Hampson and our own Judge John Arrowood who is currently serving as a Justice on the NC Court of Appeals, and the only statewide openly Gay Elected Official in North Carolina. It is IMPERATIVE to our Community and to all citizens of NC that we do absolutely everything possible to elect these Judges! As we’ve painfully seen over the last few months, the GOP NCGA Supermajority, the President of the United States and US Senate will stop at nothing in their attempt to stack the courts, not with fair and impartial Judges, but with those who will support & promote their agenda, which as we know is not favorable to the LGBTQ community, nor to all citizens of NC and our Country!! The Judicial Branch of our Government is our last line of defense against tyranny!!

As we moved into our formal Business session, a Quorum was declared and we proceeded with conducting the business of the organization. We formerly unveiled our new Logo and new marketing materials, including a informational palm card about the organization, stickers to promote visibility of the organization and a T-Shirt. We received reports from our Officers, including our Congressional District Chairs and County Presidents, made a few needed changes to our Bylaws (posted on our website), discussed plans to support Pride events across the state and GOTV activities, which will include featuring our LGBTQ Candidates and the statewide Judicial Candidates on our website, providing local and statewide canvassing/phone banking/poll working/rides to the Polls support and the announcement of the President’s Fundraising Challenge. I’m extremely excited to have received a commitment from one of our donors and inaugural members to match contributions for Electing LGBTQ Candidates! Visit our website in the coming weeks to learn more and to pledge your financial and volunteer support!

Our participation in Pride events:
Charlotte Pride was held August 18th and 19th. The LGBTQ Democrats of NC, NCDP, Mecklenburg County Democratic Party and the LGBTQ Democrats of Mecklenburg County came together to have a large presence at Charlotte Pride this year. We had a booth that was donated as an in-kind contribution by Nate Turner, Secretary LGBTQ Democrats of NC. Thank you Nate! We also had a large contingent and a float in the parade. We were joined by Elected Officials, Candidates, surrounding County Parties, including Union County and Gaston County and other Auxiliaries of the Democratic Party. We were wildly cheered on by Parade watchers along the parade route and we handed out information about the Statewide Judicial Candidates and NCDP’s “Our Carolina Promise” (visit the website for more information). We had great booth activity! Candidates used it to display materials and speak to voters. We signed up new members, received interest from people who want to start Chapters, registered new voters, passed out stickers and sold a few T-Shirts.

Additional Pride events we’ll be supporting across the state (and contacts to volunteer to help) include:

We would like to have a presence at more upcoming prides.  If you’re planning to attend and would be willing to volunteer to coordinate a table at other prides, reach out to someone on our leadership team.  We would love to also support Outer Banks Pride September 22nd, Alamance Pride October 6th, and Winston Salem Pride October 13th.

I’ll close this message with sincere thanks to our Leadership, Donors and Members, who together are taking the LGBTQ Democrats of NC to a higher level of strength and effectiveness! Remember to “Vote Your Pride! Vote Democrat!” And…Vote AGAINST ALL Constitutional Amendments!!

Yours in Service and Pride,
Ginger Walker, President
LGBTQ Democrats of North Carolina
